Stanwood’s Fields takes second

From 30th place to second place in a year, it’s been quite a climb up the ranks for Stanwood’s Minna Fields.

Fields, a junior at Stanwood High School, was the runner-up in the Class 4A girls race Saturday during the state cross country championships at Sun Willows Golf Course. After biding her time in the first mile and waiting to make her move, Fields completed the 3.1-mile (5,000-meter) course in 18 minutes, 17 seconds. Garfield senior Anna Dailey won it in 17:58.

Playoff football: Stanwood buried by Bothell, 61-0

Thirteen plays later, it was all but over.

The absolute one-sidedness of Bothell's 61-0 victory Friday night against Stanwood — the difference between a team that fought like heck to make the Class 4A playoffs and the undefeated team expected to win the whole thing — could be broken down in many ways. Perhaps the total yardage (a whole lot to not so much), the disparity in first downs (ditto) or the final score itself might suffice.

Football: Stanwood vs. Bothell in playoffs on Friday

Bothell will host Stanwood (4-5), the No. 3 Wesco North team, in the qualifying round to state at 7 p.m. this Friday at Pop Keeney Field in Bothell.

Soccer: Kamiak 2, Stanwood 1

Stanwood got on the board first with a penalty kick goal by Keanae Loera in the 55th minute. Kamiak responded with a score in the 60th minute. Cassidy Seckman took in a slot pass up the right side from Lauren Luke and found the net to tie the score.

Kamiak then scored all five of its shootout attempts to hold off Stanwood.

Soccer: Stanwood 1, Snohomish 0

At Snohomish, in the 23rd minute senior captain Riley Henderson put Stanwood up for good in the 4A District 1 playoff game. Henerson’s goal came off an assist by Keanae Loera.

Haley Haugstad came up big in goal for Stanwood (8-8-2 overall) which faces Kamiak Wednesday.

Soccer Playoffs - Stanwood 2, Shorewood 0

At Shoreline, Riley Henderson (Keanae Loera) scored in the 17th minute and Kalina Eveland (Henderson) scored in the 73rd minute for Stanwood in the 4A District 1 play-in game.

Haley Haugstad was in goal for Stanwood (7-8-2), as was Madison Hollenbeck for Shorewood (7-9-1). Stanwood advanced to play Snohomish at 7 p.m., Monday at Snohomish H.S. Shorewood was eliminated from postseason play.

Stanwood girls wants to build on district cross country title

The Stanwood girls led by top finisher Minna Fields cruised to a first-place team finish 64 points ahead of second-place Arlington.

Stanwood keeps Stilly Cup

Sparked by an excellent rushing attack, the Stanwood High School football team scored three touchdowns in the first half and held on in the final minutes for a 21-14 Western Conference North Division victory over the Arlington Eagles on Friday. Besides earning its second straight win in the annual Stilly Cup rivalry, Stanwood won a trip to the playoffs.

Volleyball: Stanwood 3, Arlington 0

At Stanwood, The Spartans won in straight sets 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 behind Shelley Dowrey's 11 kills and Sarah Titus' 14 digs and five service aces, improving Stanwood's record to 2-6 in league, 6-8 overall. Arlington (0-8, 2-12) was led by Megan Abdo with 11 assists and 16 digs.

Stilly Cup preview — Winner of rivalry game gets chance to qualify for state

Consider Friday's game to be a playoff, as the loser goes home and the winner will play for a state berth next week. Arlington (4-4 overall, 3-2 Wesco) and Stanwood (3-5, 3-2) are in a three-way tie for second with Lake Stevens and just the top three teams making the district crossover bracket. A win could put the Eagles as high as second, while a loss could knock them down to fifth.

Cross Country: Fields leads No. 6 Stanwood to Wesco North title

After enduring injuries all season, the Stanwood Spartans are getting healthy at the right time.

Junior Minna Fields set a meet record by winning the Wesco North championship race in 18:41, 12 seconds faster than the old record run by Monroe’s Lyndy Davis in 2007.

Fields was one of three top-eight individuals for Stanwood, which won its second straight North title. Natasha Verma was fifth and Jordin Stephenson eighth for the Spartans, ranked No. 6 in the 4A state coaches’ poll. Several Stanwood girls battled hip injuries this fall but are feeling better, Fields said.

Fields improved drastically over her eighth-place showing at the 2008 North championships. She sliced 70 seconds off of her time from last year.

Football: Ferndale 24, Stanwood 0

With 33 mph wind gusts, Stanwood's defense knew Ferndale would stick to the ground.

However, that knowledge still didn't prevent Ferndale from accumulating 293 rushing yards on 52 carries in Ferndale's 24-0 victory in Stanwood on Friday, Oct. 23.

Soccer: Monroe 1, Stanwood 0

Junior goalkeeper Dani Philippart made a diving save to send Monroe to a 1-0 (5-4 on penalty kicks) Western Conference North Division win over Stanwood Thursday night at Monroe High School.

Philippart stopped Stanwood’s seventh penalty kick after Monroe’s Payton Wangner gave the Bearcats (9-3-2 league and overall) the lead on the previous shot.

After going winless in their first four games this season, the Spartans appeared to be in a downward spiral. But since its 0-4 start Stanwood is 3-0, with all three wins coming in Western Conference North Division contests.

Stanwood woman a standout on WWU Waterski Team

Kelly Thees, Carl Skerlong and Kyle Foley were year-round standouts in a variety of sports during their high school days, but they discovered more fun than they ever expected when they joined the only sanctioned college water ski club in the Pacific Northwest.

Soccer: Snohomish 2, Stanwood 0

:At Stanwood, Lauren Johnson scored on an assist by Shelby Beeman in the 14th minute and Sissy Bates-Mundell scored on Annie Hund’s assist in the 38th minute as Snohomish moved into the third 4A spot in the chase for district playoff berths at 7-6 in league, 7-6 overall.

Melissa Dreves had 15 saves in goal for Snohomish, and defender Shillia Crosby helped organize Snohomish’s second shutout of the season according to Snohomish coach April VanAssche, who said Crosby took it as her job to win every ball that she could, sacrificing her body. Stanwood’s goalie was Katlyn Weaver.

Stanwood is now 6-5-2, 6-5-2.

Volleyball: Snohomish 3, Stanwood 0

At Snohomish, Snohomish defeated Stanwood 25-14, 25-17, 25-18 in straight sets to earn the Wesco North win. Karissa Lamphere had 26 digs to lead the Panthers (7-6, 7-6) and Sarah Titus led Stanwood (1-4, 5-5) with 16 digs.
