Fascinating! I love word origins, especially when a word has been so misunderstood. Most people, as you pointed out, think that the word comes from the Native Americans. But since there are hundreds of NA languages (from, I think, 7 different language groups), it doesn't make sense that all these languages would have the same term for what we're calling a shaman. I guess we'll never really know for sure the exact route it took to get into our modern lexicon, but it's definitely and interesting journey to explore.
